Dungeons & Dragons

Webmaster: Scarlett Canada

To bring the world's first and oldest role-playing game (RPG) to the students of CCCHS and help cultivate a culture of camaraderie among those who enjoy story-telling and imaginative game play.

"Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is a fantasy role-playing game (RPG) in which players create characters and embark on adventures. D&D takes many traditional elements from the fantasy genre (popularized in the mid 20th century by Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, C.S. Lewis' Chronicles of Narnia, as well as J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire in recent years) to provide players a stage on which they create. The D&D official website describes the game with reference to one of the oldest human traditions: storytelling, 'The core of D&D is storytelling. You and your friends tell a story together, guiding your heroes through quests for treasure, battles with deadly foes, daring rescues, courtly intrigue and much more.'"1

"The goal is to have a fun time journeying through adventures that D&D can provide. The club encourages students to coordinate and plan as a team. It is also an effective way to socialize."1
"D&D departs from traditional wargaming by allowing each player to create their own character to play instead of a military formation. These characters embark upon imaginary adventures within a fantasy setting. A Dungeon Master (DM) serves as the game's referee and storyteller, while maintaining the setting in which the adventures occur, and playing the role of the inhabitants of the game world. The characters form a party and they interact with the setting's inhabitants and each other. Together they solve dilemmas, engage in battles, and gather treasure and knowledge. In the process, the characters earn experience points (XP) in order to rise in levels, and become increasingly powerful over a series of separate gaming sessions."2
